No Ordinary Day
Some days are just...weird. When you wake up in the morning you have a certain expectation of what the day will hold. Usually it's the same old routine, especially on a Thursday. Yesterday did not follow that pattern, however...
A couple days ago we received a call from a supervisor at DirecTV. He told us that in a routine monitoring of our satellite signal, he discovered it was deteriorating. While we had noticed nothing at all wrong with our signal, we agreed to have a technician come for a free service call to check out our dish. The technician arrived around 3:00 yesterday, and climbed up on the roof to inspect the situation. He happily returned to us in the house to report that the dish only needed a slight adjustment and that our signal was already improved. We thanked him and he left to gather his equipment.
As he pulled his ladder away from our house, well... perhaps a picture would say it best:

Thirty Words For Thirty Days - #12
As you are no doubt aware by now, I am participating in National Blog Posting Month (NaBloPoMo). That means every day of November I'm posting a description of a person I know/knew in exactly thirty words. Check out Vignette #12...
M'am Woman
You bag groceries at my supermarket. You ask, "How are you today, M'am?" "M'am, need help to your car, M'am?" "Is it cold out today M'am?" Everywhere a M'am M'am!!!

Calling All Entomologists
Recently I noticed a new feature to a decorative birdhouse on our back porch.

Apparently the plastic foliage fooled this butterfly so completely that she not only landed on it, but laid eggs on one of the leaves and on the window ledge this is sitting on!
She stayed on our porch for two days, leaving us with dozens of neon green eggs. Then she was gone.
I wonder what kind of butterfly it is. I am not adept at the care of butterfly eggs, nor am I certain this is really a butterfly. Maybe it is some kind of man-eating moth that has spawned on our porch with a plan to devour us first...and later the whole of humanity...
Or maybe I've watched too many bad '50s horror flicks.
Does anyone know anything about this butterfly...if indeed that is what it is?
It's like freakin' Wild Kingdom around here lately!!!

My Hippy Trippy Dream
As I have mentioned before, sleep is one of my favorite things. The problem is, I never seem to get enough of it. Back in my dark days I began having insomnia problems...when you don't feel safe, it is difficult to reach a relaxed state in which to surrender to sleep...
In recent much-improved years I've battled through the insomnia and I consider my ability to regain control over my sleep one of my proudest personal victories. But when life gets stressful, or busy, or even run-of-the-mill it's not easy to get all the sleep I want and need.
This past Sunday we had absolutely nothing to get up for, so I slept late...not just late...11:30 late!!! (Gasp!)
You know that sleep-aid commercial (with the beaver, Abraham Lincoln and the scubadiver) that says, "If you can't sleep, you can't dream...?" Well, I have officially proven that...
The cats were confused by the fact that we just didn't get up, so they started getting a bit restless around 8 A.M., but it was such an indulgence to just roll over and not give them another thought. Somewhere around 10 A.M. I lapsed into a dream...the likes of which I've never experienced...

Can You Say Dedication?...I Knew You Could!
I was reading News of the Weird and I found this interesting tidbit to share with the class...
Here's what the piece said:
Australian Les Stewart holds what the Web site Oddee.com calls the "third most bizarre" of all Guinness Book world records: having typed out the written numbers "one" through "one million," over a period of 16 years from 1983 to 1998, according to an August story in his local newspaper Sunshine Coast Daily. He said he typed for 20 minutes at the beginning of every waking hour during that time because he "wanted something to do." "It just came naturally to me." - [Sunshine Coast Daily (Maroochydore, Australia), 8-22-07]
I am going to remember this man's work ethic the next time I feel that an undertaking is too daunting. He is proof positive that a little consistent effort on an enormous task over the course of time - eventually - pays off.
I wonder...if this endeavor holds the distinction of being the "third most bizarre" of all Guinness Book world records, what are the first and second? The mind reels...

What's In A Name?
...Money, apparently. It seems there are companies charging hundreds of dollars to parents- to-be for name consultation!!! Parents are unable to even name their own child now! I kid you not (I couldn't
make this stuff up)! I read about this on News of the Weird.
If you are not up the the challenge of naming your child, what are the chances that you are going to be able to say, "No!" when he is fingerpainting on your living room wall, or help her decide how to deal with the bully who is picking on her? Parenting is a serious gig for adults who are capable of making decisions, not only for themselves, but for this new person for whom they are now responsible.

A Picture Speaks A Thousand Words...

I came across this list of places Jesus has been spotted recently in an online feature called "News of the Weird." You can find the full article here.
There seems to be a neverending supply of weirdness in the world. I was looking for an alternative to the frustration of mainstream news, but this news doesn't make me feel any better about the fate of humankind...
