I love to write thoughtful, carefully crafted stories about my life, memories and aspirations... “narrative non-fiction” is what that sort of writing is called.
One of those aspirations was to have a reason to write those stories, and a place for others to read them.
That is the primary reason this blog exists. It is my place to make available the stories that live within me. It is my intention for this blog to be a reflection of myself and my interests.
I write strictly for my own pleasure (and hopefully your reading enjoyment). I do not get paid to write anything that appears on this site!
It’s all me – all the time.
That is my full disclosure…
I really dislike cooking and have wondered if it's simply depression or if it's lack of knowledge. Sometimes I think about taking a cooking class, but hell, that sounds like a lot of work too.
I really do love everything about cooking and most of what I cook is from scratch. You've caught me in one of my shortcut meals... This is one of Scott's favorite meals that pre-dates me, so I keep it in the rotation for old times' sake.
Cooking is a creative outlet for me. It makes me feel in control of part of my life and household. I think I would feel depressed if I couldn't have it as part of my daily life.
I came from a family that valued home cooking, so I grew up with that as an important part of my identity. I consider myself mainly a self-taught cook, though, from a lot of cookbooks, some learning by "osmosis" in my family and more recently Food Network. I'm certainly no expert...I'm simply adept at the kind of cooking I like to do.
I still haven't done a week's menu. Too distracted and recovering from participation in several back-to-back cooking events and am craving normal food. Having said that, we're having "Pastitsio" tonight. I'd say it's Greek mac-a-cheese.
And I'm with you, Gina. Cooking is completely a creative outlet. I love the way I feel when I'm in my kitchen enjoying something I've planned to make. It's probably my favorite thing to do!
As far as I'm concerned, being "adept at the kind of cooking" you like to do DOES make you an expert. I certainly feel as if I'm one.
I have actually made Pastitsio lots of times. There was a recipe for it in one of my first cookbooks, Betty Crocker's International Cookbook. We love it...it has been a while since I made that, so thanks for the reminder!
Thanks for the words of encouragement! It might be nice to think of myself as an expert in the kitchen...
