This is the next-to-last day of NaBloPoMo! I'm almost finished with my month of posts on the topic of things for which I am thankful. When I originally made my list of 30+ things for which I am thankful to blog about, today's was one of the first I committed to writing. Since I'm choosing my topics - for the most part - at random from that list, I've been looking for daily inspiration as to which one to choose. I've been waiting, and waiting, and waiting...I'd nearly given up on this one altogether!
I'm happy to say, however, that the inspiration arrived last night, from the unlikely source of Law and Order: Criminal Intent... It was just a snippet of a song, but it was exactly the example for which I'd been waiting!
I wanted to include a clip illustrating precisely what I mean when I say I am thankful for soulful saxophone!
OK, so I heard the song, but that that doesn't mean that I knew the name of it...
In my head I could visualize a film noir detective scene with this song in the background underscoring the sexy, sultry mood... That's all I had to go on...
Hours on the internet later, well, let's just say it's a good thing I like doing research...
My labors finally produced the title of the tune: Harlem Nocturne.
Listen, friends, and you will hear what I mean...
I was quite certain Scott would write about music when he was blogging this month about things for which he is thankful...and of course he did, confidently and with great aplomb. I, too, am thankful for music, but since I am considerably less knowledgeable (though nearly as opinionated) on the subject, I wanted to be very specific in the aspect of music I addressed.
So, here we are on the subject of soulful saxophone. I love a saxophone's deep, rich voice! When it wails - like in this clip - it sends me far away with shivers up my spine. I can feel the music reverberating within my chest...very sensual! It is such a dreamy and thrilling experience for my ears and spirit!
It's not just me, either. Duchess, the mother cat (seductively voiced by Eva Gabor) in the Disney movie The Aristocats sings:
If you want to turn me on,
Play your horn don’t spare the tone,
and blow a little soul into the tune.
At least in my appreciation for soulful saxophone, I'm in good company!
You had me with the title of the post. Now, I have to send this video to my son. He is a saxophone player currently enrolled in college majoring in music. The tenor sax (the one the guy plays in the picture)is his main horn, but he can play them all!! He loves jazz and soul the best and plans to open his own Jazz Club some day.
I love to write thoughtful, carefully crafted stories about my life, memories and aspirations... “narrative non-fiction” is what that sort of writing is called.
One of those aspirations was to have a reason to write those stories, and a place for others to read them.
That is the primary reason this blog exists. It is my place to make available the stories that live within me. It is my intention for this blog to be a reflection of myself and my interests.
I write strictly for my own pleasure (and hopefully your reading enjoyment). I do not get paid to write anything that appears on this site!
